WINDSOR, CT., March 8, 2012 - Peter L. Tedone leads a double life.
By day, Tedone is President and Chief Executive Officer of Vantis Life Insurance Co., a Windsor-based firm of 94 employees which he has guided toward record growth since he took the helm in 2000. His workaday challenges revolve around creating a unique business model, expanding sales nationwide, executing financial strategies, as well as lecturing on business strategy and ethics at the local university.
But outside of the office, his challenges change dramatically to include responding to motor vehicle accidents and other traumas, resuscitating victims of heart attacks and other medical emergencies, and coordinating responses to local disasters.
For 37 years, Tedone has been volunteering as an emergency medical technician, the last 23 of which with the Simsbury Volunteer Ambulance Association (SVAA). The organization recently named Tedone "EMT of the Year."
"I grew up in Hartford and became an EMT at age 16, when EMTs were a brand new thing in the state," said Tedone, who rides one shift a week with SVAA, down from two or three shifts in his younger days. He also served as an Emergency Medical Services Instructor for 25 years, training more than a thousand EMTs in the state.
"At Vantis Life, I'm fortunate to lead a team of people who have created a culture of giving back. We've enjoyed several consecutive years of success in the insurance industry, and we all believe that it's necessary to share our good fortune. This is evident in our employees' hard work with non-profit agencies such as the United Way of Central and Northeastern Connecticut," said Tedone. "My workplace philosophy mirrors my own value placed on the importance of giving back to the community."
"Hurricane Irene and, on its heels, the unexpected October snowstorm, were two challenging events for SVAA, but our members were well prepared due to their solid training, careful planning and unparalleled dedication. The extended interruption of electricity and other utilities, coupled with the multitude of impassable roads and damaged structures, made for two intense weeks of responding to injuries and illnesses of all kind. In some circumstances it took us more than an hour to access the people who needed help," Tedone said, adding that his community was lucky in that it wasn't worse.
Last year, Tedone, who lives in Simsbury with his wife Lydia, was honored with the American Council of Life Insurer's Distinguished Service Award for his significant contributions to the insurance industry.
